Chapel Notes

Pastor Wilfred Leow spoke on “Prayer as Spiritual Formation” based on Mark 14:26-42. Prayer as Spiritual Formation is a much neglected practice today. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus submits to God’s will to die on the cross in his spirit and yet in his flesh, he struggles. He has three times of prayer, possibly of an hour each, “saying the same things,” “Father if it be possible, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done.” Here, Jesus struggles, being very distressed over his coming death, to align his flesh which was recoiling against the pain of the cross, with his spirit.

If Jesus, the incarnate Son of God struggled with his human nature and needed to be in prayer to subdue it, what more us? We too need to have our flesh in submission to the desires of our spirit. We too need to practise prayer as Spiritual Formation.

In contrast, the disciples failed in the exercise and were not ready when the Jewish authorities came to arrest Jesus. They reacted in the flesh and Peter cut off the ear of one of them.

So, we need to align our human nature (i.e. the flesh) with our spirit so that whatever happens, we will automatically be responding as Christ would rather than the flesh would. Prayer as Spiritual Formation aids us to that end.
