weekly updatesChapel Notes

We were privileged to have Pastor Yong Teck Meng speak to us at BGST Chapel on the topic, “Running the Christian Race.” He began by reflecting on his experience of undergoing serious training in preparation for a marathon this Sunday in which he is participanting. Taking 1 Cor 9.19-27 as his text, he drew some parallels between the perspectives he gained from his own training and the lessons that can be learnt from Paul’s metaphor of the Christian life as a marathon. Two lessons stood out in his message.

First, the Christian life is to be lived with a clear view of the God-appointed aim of that life. In light of Paul’s metaphor, all runners are to run in such a way as to win the prize (v24). To be preoccupied with donning expensive gear for the race would be missing the point of running the race. One thinks, for instance, of being engaged with expensive building projects at the expense of straining towards the goal of the Christian life. Teck Meng suggested, rather insightfully, that there are “floating ministries”, that is, Christian ministries which are kept “alive” but which are quite clueless about where they are heading in the light of God’s purpose. Paul’s metaphor reminds us that there is a need to be clear about the goal of our ministerial labors. Paul’s own ministry to win others for Christ exemplifies such clarity in ministerial goals. He states that his labours are “for the sake of the gospel that I may share in its blessings” (v23).

Second, living the Christian life involves serious discipline. Paul describes this aspect as engaging in “strict training” (v25). BGST, for instance, is involved in such an endeavor from the standpoint of theological education. Teck Meng cited examples from his encounters with Christians who have a low view of the need to engage in serious training in God’s Word. They would rather “do” than train themselves to handle Scripture adequately. Christians who neglect “strict training” were likened to those who start off a marathon with a quick pace but who inevitably have great difficulty finishing the race due to lack of the required stamina that is developed through serious training.
