BIBLICAL GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY
Issue No. 07 15 - 21 Feb 2010
BGST Annual Conference is here

“Towards A Shared Marketplace Theology” (1—3 July 2010)

In 2009, BGST launched its first Annual Conference focusing on the spiritual formation of those involved in providing pastoral care. The theme of “Tending the Shepherd” brought together nearly a hundred people for the three and a half days conference.

The Annual Conference programme has the following aims:

  1. To provide quality teaching and access to the latest biblical, theological, Christian studies by bringing in noted scholars and practitioners from overseas.
  2. To serve those in Christian ministry (local & regional) who with limited time and resources are not able to fly out to conferences outside Singapore for learning and for rest.
  3. To promote a holistic approach to ministry by incorporating good teaching as well as actual time for spiritual renewal. Hence spiritual retreat will be incorporated as part of the overall approach.

This year, the Conference will focus on the marketplace with the theme Towards A Marketplace Theology.

Theme & Synopsis:
This conference seeks to bridge the gap between clergy and laity in the definition, understanding and outworking of marketplace theology in the Singapore context today.  It seeks to create a common platform for shared dialogue, and for both sides to listen to each other's worldview and perspective of what marketplace theology means and the accompanying challenges it presents.  The conference strongly believes that both clergy and laity need to work closely hand-in-hand to together develop a practical theology for the marketplace that can be both taught from the pulpit, and lived out in the globalised business world today.

In fulfillment of the conference aims, the morning plenary and afternoon workshop sessions will have two speakers in conversation, each representing the church and the marketplace.

Conference Speaker: Prof Dr Carver Yu
We are pleased to have as our keynote speaker, Professor Dr Carver Yu, who will give us a theological framework for the marketplace in the three morning addresses.

Prof Dr Carver Yu is the Senior Pastor of Cumberland Church and President of China Graduate School of Theology in Hong Kong. He will present a framework for the Conference participants to dialogue towards a shared marketplace theology in the Asian context. Prof Yu will draw from the Hong Kong experience in bringing clergy and laity closer together in mutual constructive dialogue on marketplace theology as it is being developed in Hong Kong today.

Two response speakers representing the marketplace and church perspective will give their response to Prof Yu’s addresses. On the final day, there will be a forum with all three speakers in conversation with the conference participants.

In the afternoon, we will have workshops on issues related to the marketplace e.g. What is Marketplace Mission? Believers in Business with Pre-Believers – Issues & Perspectives, The Role of the Church in the Marketplace, Marketplace Practices in the Church - Value Add or Not?
