Chapel Summary

At BGST Chapel last Wednesday, students from Rev Ng Seng Chuan's 'Scripture Recitation & Story-telling' class performed for us the fruits of their labours. Essentially, what we savoured was a series of dramatic Scriptural recitations, each complemented by a retelling or performative interpretation of a biblical story. Ms Dewi Kartika Gunawan recited from Proverbs 3 before reminding us of the folly of the lack of wisdom through the story of Genesis 3. Ms Chu Pei Shan read from Proverbs 9 and went on to expound it through a retelling of the story of Nabal and Abigail (1 Sam. 25). Here, Abigail would exemplify Wisdom herself, being able to discern how to appease David's danger and prevent wrath from falling upon her foolish husband.

Following this, Mr Luwin Wong presented Psalm 19 before emphasising the importance of a continual abidance in God's law.  This he achieves through a comparison of the young and God-fearing David (1 Sam. 17) with the old but adulterous King David (2 Sam. 12). Yet, as Luwin reminds us in his conclusion, God is always willing to heal and restore the repentant, even for a sinner such as David.

Finally, Ms Zealyn Soh recited the parable of the rich man and his barn (Luke 12) before illustrating its principles through Tolstoy's tale of the greedy Russian landowner, Pahom. Pahom had come upon a rich fertile land, which he could purchase from the natives as long as he was able to walk around it. However, due to his greed, Pahom walked way too far and finally exhausted himself to death by the time he returned to the natives.

Thus is the importance and multi-faceted quality of Wisdom.  Through wisdom, we know our place and discern properly our relationships with others. And through wisdom, death may be stayed, and we will attain for ourselves the fullness of life.
