Chapel Summary

Gloria LawLast Wednesday, Gloria Law, a current BGST student and child psychologist, shared with us her experience and reflections about ministry  with children with development disabilities. Gloria has 10 years of field experience and is now embarking on her Phd studies in autism intervention with NTU.

Gloria began her talk by discussing two definitions or models on disability. According to the medical model, people are regarded as disabled when they have physical, sensory, intellectual and/or developmental impairments. These impairments hinder them from participating in proper education, training or employment. The socio-functional model, however, argues that disabilities exist only as a result of physical, institutional and attitudinal barriers in society. Most of the infrastructure in our societies is tailored only for the healthy majority. It is often unsuitable for people with disabilities and therefore prevents them from participating fully in the society.

Yet, whether we view disability through a medical model or a socio-functional model, we cannot escape the fact that people with disabilities are not functioning up to the expectations of the public in general. In both models, the majority is regarded as stronger and more capable, while the disabled as the weaker party. To be sure, Scripture rarely discusses the nature of disabilities. Nonetheless, it clearly recognizes the existence and suffering of the disabled. Indeed, some biblical characters clearly experienced a deep suffering that arose from their impairments and barriers. These impairments and barriers, in turn, isolated them from the rest of the world.

Ideally speaking, ministry to the disabled involves bringing them from isolation to inclusion. Yet, as Gloria discovers from her personal experience, she is often the one who hinders such attempts to integrate and include the disabled through the creation of artificial barriers herself. Indeed, this phenomenon is not unique to her. Unfortunately, frequent miscommunication between the majority or public and the persons with disabilities has often caused barriers or walls to be built up between the two.

This being said, Gloria believes that it is God’s call for us is to reach out to the disabled, to show hospitality to such strangers (Heb 13:1-3) and to care for them, even in the smallest of ways (Matt 25:34-40). Indeed, the  kind of alienation experienced by the disabled or those marginalized by society can only be overcome through the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is because Jesus Himself has personally identified with those who are weak, small and insignificant and calls us, similarly, to care for them.  For it is in this way then that we serve Him.
