Imitating the Condescension of Christ (by Ps Toh Chen Puar)
At the Chapel of 7 November, Ps Toh Chen Puar from Bukit Panjang Gospel Chapel shared with BGST his reflections on the Condescension of Christ. Ps Toh began noting that Christ’s condescension was first displayed in his Incarnation, where He was born in the likeness of man and dwelt among us, in order that he might identify with the fallen humanity. As Christ’s disciples, we too must imitate Christ’s condescension and humility so that we may reach out and connect with people.
However, condescension is often costly and inconvenient affair, especially for Singaporean Christians, who are used to the convenience of commerce and communication in our country. For this reason, we need to be creative to re-imagine what condescension looks like in our “mission field”, i.e. the people whom God has called us to work with, so that we can understand the needs and struggles of God’s people and administer His word in a relevant manner even as we journey with those under our care. By doing so, we will live out the model of discipleship that was first articulated in Jesus’ life and later articulated by him in John 12:24-26: it is only by adhering to Jesus and his condescending way of life (even to death on the cross) that we will bear much fruit.
Please note that there will be no chapel on 21 November 2012.
|There will be no chapel services till 19 Dec 2012 where we will have a Christmas service led by Dr Philip Satterthwaite and pot-luck lunch. All are welcome. Please contact Angelica at 62276815 ext 221, or email email@example.com with regards to your attendance and pot-luck dish.|
