Issue No. 01 3 Jan - 9 Jan 2011
Passing the Torch

As BGST enters into a new calendar year as well as new era, it is my joy to write a few words as I “pass the torch” (obduco lampas) of BGST to our new Principal, Dr Philip E. Satterthwaite. When we were looking for someone to fill this position, it was decided that we open the selection of candidates to our current faculty members. My immediate choice was Dr Satterthwaite. I am glad that our Council has picked him as my successor.

Let me recall how we first met. During one of my frequent visits to Tyndale House, Cambridge, I had the opportunity to meet up with him, thanks to the recommendation of Dr Bruce W. Winter, who was then the Warden of Tyndale House. I recognized at once that Dr Satterthwaite was the right person for a position in Biblical Studies at BGST.

True to his word that he was interested in a long-term relationship, he has stayed with BGST for the past 12 years. He came to us with impeccable academic credentials, having graduated from the Universities of Oxford (BA), Cambridge (MA), and Manchester (PhD). His theological position was exactly what we needed at BGST. His publications have established his reputation as an evangelical biblical scholar whose scholarship has won recognition not only within evangelicalism but also in other scholarly circles. This has added immensely to the acceptance of BGST as an institution to be reckoned with among the top graduate theological schools in and beyond Singapore.

What has impressed me and my colleagues at BGST is that over the years Dr Satterthwaite has been with us, he has shown a willingness to embrace the vision and raison d'être of BGST. It must have been difficult for him to re-align his approach to theological reflection and teaching after having been an affiliated lecturer in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Cambridge and now having to incorporate in his academic work a perspective on laity training and marketplace ministries.

I close by echoing sentiments recently expressed by Dr Su Guaning, President of Nanyang Technological University that his incumbent successor, Dr Bertil Andersson, currently NTU’s provost, “is a highly accomplished academic leader who will be able to take the university to greater heights.” I am confident that Dr Satterthwaite will take BGST to a higher level that I have been able to do over the past 20 years. “Presidents … make their own marks on universities, Each benefits from his predecessors’ work, and in turn contributes to the work of his successors.” In the process as he brings his strengths to bless his institution, he creates “ripples lasting well beyond their lifetimes.”  Please give every encouragement to Dr Satterthwaite as he has taken up his new position.
