Chapel Notes

Continuing his series on Isaiah 56–66, Dr Philip Satterthwaite spoke on Isaiah 59:15–60:22 at Chapel on 26th January. He noted the strong expression of God’s commitment to see his purposes accomplished in 59:15b–20, and the glorious vision of chapter 60, in which the nations stream towards a restored Zion in order to contribute towards the rebuilding of the city and the glorification of the temple. But he also drew attention to the insistence in 59:20 that redemption is only for those who ‘turn from transgression’, which may be linked to other texts such as 57:21 (‘“There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked”’). Given the theological complexity of these chapters (and of Isaiah 56–66 as a whole) what form might we expect the fulfilment of the promises in chapters 59–60 to take? Dr Satterthwaite went on to note that in the NT the direction of Isaiah 60 is decisively reversed: it is not so much that the nations come to Zion, but that Zion (in the form of the spreading Christian church) goes out to the nations. Here is a mandate, perhaps, for marketplace ministry, a ministry that seeks to take the gospel into every part of society, bringing the values of the kingdom of God to bear on it.
