Issue No. 16 18 - 24 Apr 2011

Chapel Summary

Pastor Alby Yip

Alby YipOur chapel speaker this week was Pastor Alby Yip. He is the English congregation pastor at Grace Singapore Chinese Christian Church. He spoke on the topic “The Servant of God” based on 1 Thess 2:1-12. Pastor Alby highlighted that Paul used different metaphors to describe what a servant of God is like: a faithful steward (verses 1-6), a loving mother (verses 7-8) and a caring father (verses 9-12).

As a faithful steward, the servant of God is persistent, skilful and honest. Like a loving mother, the servant of God is also gentle and sacrificial. Finally, like a caring father, the servant of God is hardworking and responsible.

Pastor Alby shared several ministry examples and observations as he explained these three aspects. He pointed out that as we serve in church, we must beware of practices that discourage others or sow discord rather than build up fellow co-workers and Christians. He cited a case where church leaders were task-oriented and insensitive to the effect on staff of the timing of dismissal. Or when a church has established a strong and fruitful ministry, he cautioned that we must beware lest that ministry is so extolled that it becomes a golden calf. Another example is the misuse of e-mails when we disseminate information and details to persons not party to the issue of discussion. There are church leaders who allowed their disagreement and bickering to erupt in front of the church congregation, by misusing emails in this way.

These actions are not those of a servant of God, according to the apostle Paul’s teaching. Ministry is not about project work, but about people work. Would we rather be wronged that wrong others? And so people are important, and the servant of God must be faithful, loving and caring like a steward, mother and father. As servants of God, we must live a life that can stand up to scrutiny, and is worthy of the God we proclaim.
