Book Recommendations

Apart from updating our curriculum to meet the needs of Christians in our modern society and ensuring a balanced offering of courses each semester, BGST has consistently been acquiring serious and leading publications to the extent that our budget allows. This is so that students and alumni will have access to a library that contains the latest scholarship in the various theological disciplines. Below are two examples of recent acquisitions among others that might interest readers of BTW. Both are hot off the press and works of very high quality.

Paul's letter to the RomansKruse, Colin G. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Pillar New Testament Commentary. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans / Nottingham: APOLLOS, 2012 [LC 227.1077 KRU].

“Paul’s letter to the Romans may well be the most influential book in Christian history. In this Romans commentary Colin Kruse shows how Paul expounds the gospel against the background of God’s sovereign action as creator, judge, and redeemer of the world. Valuable ‘additional notes’ on important theological themes and difficult texts – such as Paul’s discussion of same-sex relationship, the salvation of ‘all Israel’, and the woman Junia, who was ‘well known among the apostles’ – further connect Romans to contemporary issues. Throughout his commentary Kruse expertly guides readers through the plethora of interpretations of Romans, providing a reliable exposition of this foundational epistle.”

Dictionary of Old Testament ProphetsBoda, M. J. and McConville, J. G. Dictionary of the Old Testament Prophets: A Compendium of Contemporary Biblical Scholarship. Downers Grove: IVP Academic / Nottingham: IVP, 2012 [REF 224.03 DIC].

The Dictionary of the Old Testament Prophets is the only reference book of its kind. Not only does it focus exclusively on the prophetic books, it also plumbs their imagery of mountains and wilderness, flora and fauna, temple and Zion. It maps and guides us through topics such as covenant and law, exile and deliverance, forgiveness and repentance, and the Day of the Lord. Here the nature of prophecy is searched out in its social, historical, literary and psychological dimensions as well as its synchronic spread of textual links and associations…In 115 articles it puts readers in direct touch with contemporary scholarship, probing questions new and old. It is an essential aid to the study of the Old Testament prophets.”
